What are veneers?

Veneers are wafer-thin shells made of porcelain laminate bonded to the front of your natural, permanent teeth. While it’s possible to get only one or two veneers, Dr. Talerman usually recommends getting six or eight. Doing so ensures your smile is symmetrical and balanced.

What types of cosmetic issues can veneers treat?

Porcelain laminate veneers are incredibly versatile. Dr. Talerman uses them to correct a variety of cosmetic imperfections, including:

  • Broken teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Severely discolored teeth
  • Smaller-than-average teeth
  • Teeth with gaps or spaces between them

You might also benefit from veneers if you have pointed or unusually shaped teeth.

Am I a good candidate for veneers?

To determine if you’re a good candidate for veneers, Dr. Talerman conducts an oral exam and asks about your goals for treatment. If you have crooked or uneven teeth, he might recommend orthodontic treatment with Invisalign® before moving forward.

Next, Dr. Talerman takes X-rays to evaluate the health of your teeth. If you have cavities or gum disease, you may not qualify for veneers. Afterward, Dr. Talerman measures your teeth and makes recommendations for the number of veneers you’ll need.

What is the process of getting veneers?

Getting veneers usually takes two separate appointments.

Once Dr. Talerman approves your treatment plan, he administers a local anesthetic and prepares your teeth to receive the veneers. To do this, he carefully shaves a layer of enamel from each tooth, about one millimeter thick.

Next, Dr. Talerman takes impressions of your teeth. He sends your impressions to a dental laboratory that makes your veneers.

A week or two later, you return to Steven A. Talerman DDS. He lines up your veneers over your teeth and bonds them in place using dental cement. The entire process takes 45-60 minutes, and you leave the office with a new, brilliant smile.

How do I take care of my veneers?

Veneers are tough, but they may chip or crack without proper care. To keep your veneers white and free of damage, Dr. Talerman recommends brushing and flossing regularly and visiting the practice every six months for professional cleanings and exams.

You should also avoid bad habits like nail-biting and chewing on ice cubes, hard candy, or popcorn kernels. If you play contact sports, mountain bike, or skateboard, make sure to wear a mouthguard during these activities as well.
